How 2048 works
Tiles slide as far as they can in the direction you choose. When two tiles with the same number collide they merge into one tile with their sum, and you score that value. After every move a new 2 (sometimes a 4) appears in an empty cell. The round ends when the board is full and no merge is possible. Reaching 2048 is a win — you can keep playing for a higher score.
Why people stay for another round
2048 is built on a tiny rule with a huge ‘one more move’ loop. Every slide is a trade-off between space and value, so a quiet board can collapse in three turns — or a messy one can still be saved. It is the most replayed number game on the site for a reason.
Tips
- Keep your highest tile in a corner and build along one edge.
- Avoid up-and-down thrashing; pick a home edge and stay loyal to it.
- Do not chase every merge. Empty space is worth more than a greedy 8.
